Lubricants

Typically, lubricants must have an operational life of several hundred or thousands of hours during which their essential qualities must remain essentially unchanged. However, they could undergo total or partial transformation through heat degradation, oxidation, or hydrolysis.
Materials of extremely high molecular weight, particularly intractable compounds resembling coke, as well as low molecular weight materials, including gases, are produced as a result of thermal decomposition followed by polymerization.
